Royals snatch last play-off spot, Kings and Knight Riders fall short

Rajasthan Royals edged into the IPL 2026 play-offs after a nervy, five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Sunday afternoon. The result lifts RR to 16 points – just enough to leapfrog Punjab Kings (15) and to stay beyond Kolkata Knight Riders, who can reach a maximum of 15 even if they beat Delhi Capitals later tonight.

“Qualifying was in our hands and I’m pleased we finished the job,” Royals skipper Sanju Samson said moments after shaking hands with Rohit Sharma. “There’s still plenty to tidy up, but for now we’ll take a breath.”

Jofra Archer, back at his old home ground, set the tone with a brisk 3-for, restricting MI to 159. Mumbai’s season closes with four wins from 14 – the same return as Lucknow Super Giants, who stay bottom only on net run rate. Head coach Mark Boucher didn’t hide: “Four wins in 14 is not good enough, we’ve got work to do.”

Play-off picture
• Qualifier 1: Royal Challengers Bengaluru v Gujarat Titans in Dharamsala, 26 May. Winner straight to the final.
• Eliminator: Sunrisers Hyderabad v Rajasthan Royals in New Chandigarh, 27 May. Loser goes home.
• Qualifier 2: Loser of Q1 v Winner of Eliminator, New Chandigarh, 29 May.
• Final: Ahmedabad, 31 May – with only a day’s travel for the Qualifier 2 victor.

That schedule means whichever side slips up in Qualifier 1 faces three cities in six days, while the Eliminator winner would play three matches in five. Analyst Lisa Sthalekar summed it up: “Sixteen points was always the magic number this season, but the route from fourth to the trophy still feels like a marathon.”

Punjab Kings, who completed their programme on Saturday, could do nothing but watch. “It’s frustrating to miss out by one point, especially after the start we had,” captain Shikhar Dhawan admitted on television duty.

Knight Riders, meanwhile, require a landslide win in the late game merely to draw level with Punjab – not enough after RR’s result. Coach Chandrakant Pandit chose realism over hope: “Our chances effectively disappeared this afternoon.”

For the Royals, attention already shifts to New Chandigarh. Samson hinted at a fresh surface: “We’ve not played there this year, so a quick look at the square tomorrow is the first job.”

No big celebrations yet, just a sense of relief and another flight to catch – typical of the IPL’s closing week.
