Jamaica Empress to debut as WCPL grows to four teams

The Women’s Caribbean Premier League will have a fresh look in 2026. Jamaica Empress, backed by the island’s cricket board and a small group of private investors, slots in alongside the established Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders, taking the tournament from three sides to four.

Matches run 5-17 September, all in Barbados. Every side meets the other three once, a tidy round-robin. Finish top and you walk straight into the final; finish second or third and you scrap for the remaining spot on 16 September. Bottom side goes home early.

Barbados Royals, champions in 2023, 2024 and 2025, start as favourites, though Trinbago – winners of the inaugural event in 2022 – rarely roll over. Guyana are still chasing a first title; the new Jamaican outfit will simply want to be competitive out of the gate.

In a short statement the league hinted that more change is coming. “Looking ahead to 2027, the WCPL is preparing to take the next step in its evolution, with plans to welcome teams from outside the Caribbean and establish the tournament as a truly global competition,” the release read. No further detail yet, but eyes will be on North American franchises and perhaps a UK link.

A fourth team is a small step, yet it feels significant: more playing time for regional talent, another pathway for youngsters, and a broader product for broadcasters. If the mooted overseas expansion lands in 2027, the WCPL could quickly shift from niche to genuinely global – but, for now, September in Barbados remains the immediate focus.
