Lister picks up demerit point after equipment outburst in Scotland’s World T20 defeat

Scotland opener Ailsa Lister has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Thursday’s Women’s T20 World Cup match against West Indies.

The incident unfolded late in Scotland’s chase, in the 19th over, when Lister trudged off for a brisk 33 from 25 balls. Frustration got the better of her: she hurled bat and gloves to the turf before booting over a bin beside the dug-out. Match officials Claire Polosak, Kerrin Klaaste, N Janani and Nimali Perera charged the 22-year-old under Article 2.2, covering “abuse of cricket equipment or fittings”.

Lister accepted the charge, so there was no need for a hearing with match referee GS Lakshmi. It is her first offence in the current 24-month window. Under Level 1 guidelines, sanctions range from a written reprimand up to 50 per cent of a match fee, plus one or two demerit points; on this occasion she copped the minimum.

Scotland’s chase of 154 never fully recovered after Lister fell, eventually stalling at 137 for eight. Head coach Peter Ross, speaking afterwards, kept matters in perspective: “We’re all human. Emotions run high. Ailsa knows the standards we set.”

Demerit points stay on a player’s record for two years, and four such points in that period trigger a suspension. For now, Lister remains free to play, though the episode serves as a reminder—both for her and for Scotland’s young side—of the thin line between passion and over-stepping the mark.
