Burger sidelined, Forrester drafted as Super Kings shuffle bowling unit

South Africa’s left-arm quick Nandre Burger is out of the remainder of Major League Cricket 2026 after scans confirmed a “pre-existing stress reaction” in his lower back. The Texas Super Kings confirmed the news on Monday, naming fellow South African all-rounder Dian Forrester as replacement.

Burger, 28, managed just two outings this season, returning 1 for 40 from his six overs – tidy enough at 6.66 an over, yet not the impact he or the franchise wanted. More worrying for Cricket South Africa is the timing: an eight-Test home stretch looms, starting with Australia’s visit in late September. Losing a fit, lively left-armer on home soil is never ideal, even if the medical team insist this is precautionary.

Forrester, 26, is hardly a stranger to the set-up. He has already worked under Stephen Fleming at Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and was a short-term signing for Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2026, fresh from a stint in the PSL. Comfortable at No.7 and steady with the new ball, he offers balance rather than outright pace. The franchise statement was brief: “Dian understands the group and offers us handy flexibility.”

The Super Kings have had other niggles. Faf du Plessis missed the defeat to MI New York in Dallas with a back spasm; Donnovan Ferreira took the armband for that match. One win from three leaves TSK fifth in the six-team table ahead of tonight’s trip to Oakland to face the San Francisco Unicorns.

South Africa’s fixture list, for the record, starts with three ODIs against Australia from 24 September, followed by three Tests running into the end of October. Whether Burger is back by then will rest on how quickly that stress reaction settles – and how cautious the medical staff remain. As one insider put it, “Better to lose him for a fortnight now than for a whole summer later.”
