Shadab joins Lancashire, Philippe adds depth to Surrey ahead of Blast weekend

Lancashire and Surrey have both strengthened for the back half of the Vitality Blast, confirming short-term deals for Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan and Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe.

Lancashire move first. Shadab, 27, arrives as a like-for-like replacement for Chris Green, whose season has been cut short by injury. The leg-spinning all-rounder is available immediately and is expected to feature against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Friday night.

“I am delighted to sign for Lancashire for the rest of the Vitality Blast,” Shadab said. “I love playing cricket in England and have really enjoyed my previous stints in the competition. Lancashire is one of the biggest clubs in the country, with so much history, and I can’t wait to pull on the shirt at Emirates Old Trafford in front of the home fans.”

It is a familiar move. Shadab has already worn Sussex and Yorkshire colours in the Blast and remains a fixture in Pakistan’s T20 side. His international numbers—1,009 runs at a strike-rate of 144 and 123 wickets at 24, conceding 7.4 an over—suggest immediate impact with bat or ball. How quickly he adapts to Old Trafford’s bigger square boundaries may decide Lancashire’s push for the quarter-finals.

Surrey, meanwhile, turn to Philippe as cover for England call-ups Will Jacks and Sam Curran. Philippe landed in London on Wednesday and could slot straight into the top order when Surrey visit Sussex on Friday. If Gareth Batty’s side progress, the Australian will stay on for the knock-out rounds.

“Josh Philippe is an excellent top-order batter to bring into the group ahead of Friday’s match at Sussex,” director of cricket Alec Stewart said. A glance at Philippe’s T20 résumé—Big Bash runs at a shade under 140 per hundred—explains the enthusiasm. His busy approach fits the Kia Oval’s true pitch and short square boundaries, and Surrey will expect quick returns.

For Philippe the lure was simple. “The opportunity to join Surrey was a no-brainer for me. It’s a massive club with some highly skilled players. I want to help the group push for the latter stages of the Vitality Blast,” he said, adding: “The Kia Oval is one of the great grounds in world cricket, so to be based there for a month will be awesome.”

Both signings look short-term yet significant. Lancashire need wickets in the middle overs; Surrey crave stability at the top while England duty bites. Neither county has room for a slow start—the Blast’s group phase finishes in a fortnight—so Friday night could offer early clues as to whether these moves pay off.
