Sri Lanka opt to chase in high-stakes meeting with Scotland

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu called correctly at the toss in Manchester and, without much hesitation, asked Scotland to bat first on what looks a dry, used strip at Old Trafford. The decision keeps her side’s destiny half-open: victory tonight is essential to stay in the hunt for a semi-final spot, yet they still need England to see off New Zealand and Ireland to upset West Indies later in the week.

“I am pretty confident about my bowling unit,” Athapaththu said. “I think 130-140 will be a good score to chase. We will try to win this game and then see how the numbers work.”

The arithmetic is blunt. Lose, and Sri Lanka not only exit this tournament but also surrender the automatic berth for the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup that comes with finishing in the top six here.

Scotland’s own semi-final ambitions disappeared two nights ago, although Kathryn Bryce’s team still have something tangible on the line: a win tonight would rubber-stamp their direct passage to 2028. They have freshened the XI, bringing in seamer Gabriella Fontenla for Hannah Rainey, a straight swap that offers a touch more pace on a surface expected to favour spin.

So far this World Cup, spinners have averaged nearly three runs fewer per over in Manchester than the quicks, helped by square boundaries of just 61 metres; the straight fence is longer at 70 m, but mishits are still carrying. Sri Lanka will lean on left-armer Sugandika Kumari and off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari to exploit those numbers, while Scotland place similar faith in leg-spinner Katherine Fraser and the left-arm orthodox of Kirstie Gordon.

Neither side tinkered up top. Darcey Carter keeps her place as Scotland’s power-play aggressor, and Imesha Dulani continues to partner Athapaththu for Sri Lanka. On paper, the match-ups feel even; in reality, one team plays for survival, the other for future security. That usually makes for tight evenings.
