Surrey have turned to a familiar face, bringing Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott in for what will be his fourth spell at the Kia Oval. The deal, confirmed on Thursday, covers the opening eight rounds of the County Championship – starting away to Warwickshire over Easter – and the whole of the Vitality Blast. His stint is due to finish in July.
The 34-year-old already owns two Championship winner’s medals from 2023 and 2024. Last summer Surrey’s tilt at a fourth straight title fell short, Nottinghamshire edging them out. With Kemar Roach now at Durham, Abbott’s return restores some tried-and-trusted bite to a bowling unit that still leans heavily on experience.
A quick look at the numbers explains the move. Abbott sits on 49 first-class wickets for Surrey at 25.73 and is 381 runs short of 1,000 for the club, scoring them at a handy average of 38.37. In white-ball cricket he boasts 58 caps for Australia, split evenly between ODIs and T20Is, collecting 79 wickets. Closer to home fans will remember his record-equalling 34-ball Blast century against Kent in 2023; overall he has 25 Blast wickets and 221 runs. Down under, he remains the leading wicket-taker in Big Bash history with 186.
“The opportunity to rejoin Surrey for the 2026 season was a no brainer for me,” said Abbott. “The club has become a real home away from home. The dressing room environment is one of the best I’ve experienced in my career and I’m looking forward to linking up with the group once more. I can’t wait to walk out at the Kia Oval wearing the Three Feathers once again and help push the group for more success this summer.”
Director of men’s cricket Alec Stewart was equally pleased. “We look forward to Sean rejoining us back at the Kia Oval. His qualities as a cricketer speak for themselves and I have no doubts he will fit straight back into the dressing room,” he said.
Assuming he stays fit, Abbott’s very first Championship scalp of 2026 will be his 50th for Surrey – a nice, round landmark and, the club hope, merely the start of another productive chapter.
