Sunrisers Hyderabad’s six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on Wednesday night did more than seal two points. It shuffled both leader-boards that everyone seems to keep an eye on once the group stage settles: Orange for runs, Purple for wickets.
Orange Cap – runs first, spotlight later
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had been sitting pretty, first man past 400 this season, but that cushion lasted only a match. Abhishek Sharma’s brisk 45 from 24 balls pushed him to 425 runs, a whisker clear of team-mate Heinrich Klaasen, whose unbeaten 65 (30) took him to 414.
The South African’s method drew praise from former MI seamer Mitchell McClenaghan. “Klaasen is navigating innings with youngsters,” he said on the host broadcaster, pointing to the way Klaasen kept debutant Pratik Desai calm during a tricky three-over passage.
Saba Karim felt the timing of the assault mattered just as much. “the SRH batter counterattacked at the right time,” he noted, referencing Klaasen’s pair of sixes off Jasprit Bumrah that flipped the asking rate from awkward to manageable.
Sooryavanshi now sits third on 400, followed by KL Rahul (Delhi Capitals) and Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru). Only that quintet has cleared 350; another seven are already beyond 300, underlining how flat most wickets have been.
Purple Cap – wickets still count
Eshan Malinga, slinging and smiling in equal measure, nipped out Suryakumar Yadav for 1 for 29. Not eye-catching on a night when MI bled 12 runs an over, yet enough to move him to 15 wickets and sole possession of the Purple.
Behind him: Bhuvneshwar Kumar (RCB), Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals) and Chennai’s left-arm seamer Anshul Kamboj, all on 14. Prince Yadav (Lucknow Super Giants) and Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans) are a stride back with 13 apiece. No spinner in that list – chalk it up to fresh white Kookaburras and power-play fielding restrictions that never seem to end.
Bits & bobs the analysts chase
• Tournament MVP calculator still likes Sooryavanshi: runs, catches and a handy over or two each game.
• Best strike rate? Glenn Phillips is rattling along at 211 – nine innings is a small sample, but tell that to the bowler.
• Most catches: Ravindra Jadeja (12) continues to hover in the deep like he owns it.
• Fifty-plus scores: Kohli now has five, consistency personified even if acceleration has become an argument for another day.
What next? SRH travel to Ahmedabad on Sunday; another good deck, another chance for Abhishek and Klaasen to stretch the lead. For the bowlers, patience – heavy dew and short squares make every dot feel like gold dust.
