Ahmed swaps Rockets for Phoenix in early Hundred reshuffle

Rehan Ahmed’s cricketing sat-nav has recalculated. The 21-year-old all-rounder has left Trent Rockets and, pending the March auction, becomes Birmingham Phoenix’s first direct signing for the 2026 edition of the Hundred.

Phoenix performance director James Thomas and newly appointed men’s coach Shane Bond have moved quickly in this first privately-owned cycle. Teams may lock in up to four players before the auction; Ahmed is the opening name on Birmingham’s list.

“The vision and strategy set out by James and Bondy was something that I really wanted to be a part of so I’m happy to have signed for the Birmingham Phoenix,” Ahmed said. “It’s an ambitious franchise with big plans and Edgbaston is obviously an amazing place to play cricket, so I’m really looking forward to getting started next year and hopefully being part of a squad which will challenge for silverware in The Hundred.”

Thomas called him “one of the players we identified very early on as somebody who aligns perfectly with our strategy” and added: “He is one of the most highly rated players in the country and has the ability to make a huge impact with both bat and ball. Although he is still in the early stages of his career, there is no doubt about his ability and we are confident he will be a key player for the Birmingham Phoenix next season.”

Those claims are backed up by numbers. Last summer Ahmed claimed 12 wickets and contributed 180-plus runs for Rocket’s run to the final. Earlier, he helped Leicester secure the Division Two Championship title: 23 wickets at 19 apiece and an eye-catching batting average of 50.67, five hundreds included. The leg-spin variations are well known; the willingness to counter-punch with the bat feels equally valuable in a 100-ball sprint.

There has been a bump or two. A strained leg muscle cut short his England Lions trip in Australia last month – the injury arrived while turning out for the senior side in the Ashes warm-up at Perth. Fit again, he has re-joined Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL. One over for five runs and 2 from 5 balls with the bat in the win over Sydney Thunder hardly moves the dial, yet simply getting back on the park matters after a niggle.

England remain interested. Ahmed, five Tests into his international journey, was mentioned as a possible second spinner in the Ashes squad before Will Jacks edged ahead. Jacks has since joined the Test party for Adelaide; Ahmed will focus on Edgbaston for now.

It is early days in the Hundred signing window, but Phoenix have bagged a player whose ceiling still looks some distance away.
