England remains optimistic about fast bowler Gus Atkinson’s recovery in time for next month’s Test series against India, despite a hamstring injury excluding him from the imminent one-day internationals against West Indies.
During the third day of England’s comprehensive innings victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, Atkinson delivered a three-over spell but was later seen nursing his hamstring. Consequently, he’s been withdrawn from the upcoming three-match ODI series starting Thursday. An ECB representative confirmed, “He will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team.”
Since debuting last July, Atkinson has proven to be a formidable figure in England’s Test line-up, securing 55 wickets with an average of 22.30 across 12 matches. While his absence from the ODI squad is a setback, England remains hopeful he’ll be match-fit for the first Test against India at Headingley on 20 June.
Recently, England’s pace attack was stretched thin against Zimbabwe, yet Brydon Carse (toe) and Chris Woakes (ankle) have returned to action in the County Championship. Jofra Archer (thumb) aims to re-enter Test cricket during the series with India, although Mark Wood (knee) has been ruled out entirely.
Archer’s absence from the ODIs against West Indies will see Luke Wood take his place, while Atkinson won’t be replaced. England’s seam options for the series opener at Edgbaston include Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, and Matthew Potts.
Woakes will further his recovery by playing for the England Lions against India A at Canterbury. The Lions’ squad also features Sonny Baker and Josh Hull, both on England development contracts, alongside Hampshire’s Eddie Jack and Gloucestershire’s Ajeet Singh Dale, the latter two yet to make their first-class debut.
This dynamic mix of experience and emerging talent underscores England’s adaptability in fast-bowling resources amid ongoing challenges.
