Axar opts to chase as Suryakumar deputises for unwell Pandya

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel won the toss in New Delhi and, without over-thinking it, chose to bowl first against Mumbai Indians. The call suited stand-in Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav, who revealed Hardik Pandya was feeling under the weather and therefore rested.

“The toss was ‘irrelevant’ – they wanted to bowl, we wanted to bat,” Suryakumar told the host broadcaster with a shrug.

Pandya’s late withdrawal forced a mini-reshuffle. Fast-medium pair Deepak Chahar and Corbin Bosch were drafted in, Trent Boult making way to keep the overseas quota balanced. Newly-arrived left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner replaced teenager AM Ghazanfar in the XI, giving Mumbai an extra slow-bowling option on a black-soil surface that can grip as the game drags on.

The match is on pitch No. 6, the very track on which Sunrisers piled up 278 for 3 last season. Square boundaries are 60 and 67 metres, the straight hit a shade longer at 73, so captains still talk about “miss-hits going the distance”, even if the deck is expected to slow later tonight.

Capitals are unchanged, banking on the same mix that served them well last week. KL Rahul keeps wicket at the top, while South African finisher Tristan Stubbs again slots in at seven. Impact-Player cards are headlined by tearaway Dushmantha Chameera for DC and leg-spinner Mayank Markande for MI – neither side committing yet to when, or if, they’ll be deployed.
