Bangladesh opt to bat; Pakistan draft in Rubab and Jabeen for must-win clash

News – Group 1, Women’s T20 World Cup, Southampton

Bangladesh won the toss and, after a brief chat among the senior players, chose to bat first against Pakistan. A bright surface, a hint of breeze across the ground, and — in the words of captain Nigar Sultana — “a chance to post something solid before it slows up later”.

It is only the second World-Cup meeting between the sides; the last, back in 2016, went emphatically Pakistan’s way. Pakistan still lead the overall ledger 16-4, yet three of Bangladesh’s victories have arrived in their last four encounters. Momentum, if such a thing exists after a coin toss, feels shared.

Bangladesh arrived with one win (Netherlands) and one defeat (Australia). They have shuffled just the single card, seamer Shanjida Akter Meghla replacing leg-spinner Sultana Khatun. “We liked what we saw from Meghla in training,” coach Hashan Tillakaratne told local radio. “She offers a touch of extra bounce here.”

Pakistan’s position is starker. Beaten by India and then South Africa, they need points tonight or the semi-final door all but slams shut. Captain Fatima Sana has turned to left-arm seamer Tasmia Rubab and middle-order batter Saira Jabeen, leaving out off-spinner Rameen Shamim and the experienced Natalia Perviaz.

“We will have to show discipline and calm,” Fatima said on the broadcast feed, acknowledging the sloppy run-outs and dropped chances that undermined the South Africa outing. Former skipper Sana Mir, on commentary duty, agreed: “Fielding’s the free currency in T20s — spend it poorly and you end up overpaying with the ball.”

Conditions look friendly for batting early on, though the square usually grips once lights take hold. Former England opener Mel Jones noted, “140 can be tricky here if the slower balls stick.” Bangladesh will think anything north of 130 keeps them in the game.

Teams
Bangladesh: Juairiya Ferdous, Dilara Akter, Sharmin Supta, Nigar Sultana (capt), Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Rabeya Khan, Nahida Akter, Marufa Akter, Shanjida Akter Meghla.

Pakistan: Gull Feroza, Muneeba Ali, Ayesha Zafar, Iram Javed, Saira Jabeen, Aliya Riaz, Fatima Sana (capt), Tuba Hasan, Tasmia Rubab, Nashra Sandhu, Sadia Iqbal.

A gentle reminder for casual viewers: left-arm seam (Rubab) angles the ball across right-handers, inviting edges; leg-break bowlers (Shorna, Tuba) spin it the opposite way. Nothing too fancy, just enough variety to keep this tournament, and tonight’s match, alive.

First ball is due shortly.
