The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to introduce a revenue-sharing model in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the first time. This decision aims to assist franchises from last season who have not settled their player payments, a matter discussed in a recent governing council meeting in Dhaka.
Last season, the payment issues became prominent when overseas players from Durbar Rajshahi boycotted a match protesting non-payment. Local players also joined the protest by missing a training session. The situation escalated when some overseas players were left stranded at the team hotel due to unpaid dues, pushing Bangladesh’s sports ministry to urge team owner Shafiqur Rahman for resolution.
To address this, the BCB plans to allocate a portion of the revenue generated from ticket sales to the seven teams, based on their positions in the points table. Playoff-reached teams will receive BDT 5.5 million (around USD 45,000), while those that didn’t make it will get BDT 4.5 million (approximately USD 36,000).
“This is the first time that the BCB will distribute revenue from ticket sales to BPL franchises,” a statement from the BCB confirmed. “These funds, expected to be disbursed before Eid-ul-Adha, will only be released after verifying that players have received due payments.”
Moreover, the governing council clarified the criteria for the financial aid and warned of legal measures against franchises failing to honour financial commitments.
“The final disbursement amount for each franchise will be determined proportionally, based on the percentage of outstanding player payments they have cleared relative to their eligible share,” noted the statement. Additionally, “The Governing Council has decided to pursue legal action against any franchise that continues to default on payment obligations despite repeated official notices. This decision reflects the BCB’s commitment to ensuring contractual accountability and maintaining the integrity of the league.”
This initiative marks a significant step by the BCB to safeguard the interests of the players and uphold the reputation of the league.
