Bhuvneshwar nudges ahead in Purple Cap race; Kohli breaks into top four

Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed only 12.3 overs on Monday night to dismantle Delhi Capitals for 75 and chase the target with nine wickets and 81 balls in hand. Unsurprisingly, the mayhem left its mark on both cap tables.

First, the wickets. Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a three-over burst of 3 for 5, removing Prithvi Shaw, David Warner and Shai Hope inside the powerplay. Those strikes moved him to 14 wickets at 16.85, a fraction ahead of Anshul Kamboj (16.92) and Eshan Malinga (18.21). “Bhuvi plays every game with full intensity,” observed Piyush Chawla on television, praising the veteran’s knack for new-ball movement that still “catches batters on the hop”.

Josh Hazlewood matched the early menace, nipping out three of the Capitals’ top six before returning to finish with 4 for 12. The Australian doubled his tournament tally to eight wickets and climbed to 14th on the list. Left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya collected a solitary scalp, enough to sneak into the top ten with nine wickets at 26.55.

Now the runs. With only 152 of them scored across both innings, there was limited opportunity for movement, yet Virat Kohli found a milestone. His unbeaten 23 carried him beyond 9000 IPL runs and lifted him to fourth in the Orange Cap standings with 351 at 58.50. “I’m trying to keep things simple and cash in when the ball is in my zone,” he told the host broadcaster, typically under-playing the significance of another landmark.

KL Rahul’s solitary run earlier in the evening nudged him past Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into second place on 358, while Sunrisers opener Abhishek Sharma remains out in front with 380 at 54.28. Sooryavanshi sits third, six behind Rahul and seven ahead of Kohli, hinting at a tight battle as the league phase turns for home.

RCB bowling coach Adam Griffith pointed to disciplined basics rather than magic. “Hit the seam, keep the stumps in play, and let the pitch do the talking,” he said, echoing an approach that reduced Delhi to a record-low 13 for 6 after six overs.

Key numbers at a glance
• Purple Cap leader: Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 14 wickets, avg 16.85
• Orange Cap leader: Abhishek Sharma – 380 runs, avg 54.28
• Lowest powerplay total in IPL history: Delhi Capitals 13 for 6

With both races tight and the playoff picture still blurred, consistency rather than fireworks may determine who wears the caps come May’s business end.
