Bulbulia to skipper SA Under-19s at early-2026 World Cup

South Africa have confirmed a 15-player squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup, to be co-hosted by Namibia and Zimbabwe from 15 January to 6 February. All-rounder Muhammed Bulbulia takes the captaincy, tasked with ending an 11-year wait for a second title after the class of 2014 lifted the trophy in Dubai.

The draw has placed South Africa in Group D alongside West Indies, Afghanistan and tournament newcomers Tanzania. Their opener comes against Afghanistan at Windhoek’s HP Oval on 16 January, before meetings with West Indies and Tanzania round out the section.

Head coach Malibongwe Maketa, who has worked with many of the players since provincial age-group cricket, believes the squad have matured quickly.

“What has impressed me most is the growth these players have shown,” Maketa said. “From meeting them as 16-year-olds to seeing who they are now, it’s clear we’re developing not just cricketers, but good young men for this country.”

He added that the group now understands the step up required. “Cricket-wise, their understanding of the intensity required at international level has been outstanding. They’ve gone back to work with their coaches and returned with a new level of intent at every session — exactly what’s needed to compete at a World Cup.”

Maketa’s confidence is obvious yet measured. “I’m very confident in this group. The progress they’ve made, combined with a culture built on hard work, resilience and putting the team first, gives me real belief. They’ve embraced those values with hunger and quiet confidence.”

Preparation includes three Youth ODIs against India at Willowmoore Park, Benoni, from 5-7 January. Those matches should firm up roles, particularly in the middle order where competition remains tight.

Bulbulia’s own form has been strong across recent CSA Cubs Week and provincial fixtures. He offers seam-up overs in the powerplay and has shown composure finishing innings, though he knows runs on harder southern African surfaces will count for more than youth-week numbers.

Squad
Muhammad Bulbulia (capt), JJ Basson, Daniel Bosman, Corne Botha, Paul James, Enathi Khitshini Tembalethu, Michael Kruiskamp, Adnaan Lagadien, Bayanda Majola, Armaan Manack, Bandile Mbatha, Lethabo Phahlamohlaka, Jason Rowles, Ntandoyenkosi Soni, Jorich van Schalkwyk.

South Africa’s build-up looks sound; whether that translates to knockout cricket in late January will hinge on how quickly teenagers adapt to senior-style pressure. Still, with a balanced bowling attack and several top-order stroke-makers, a semi-final run feels a realistic first target.
