Bumrah back, but injured Gill sits out Ahmedabad T20I

Jasprit Bumrah’s name is back on the Indian team sheet, yet the big talking point remains the absence of Shubman Gill. The vice-captain bruised his right foot while having a quiet hit in the Lucknow nets on 16 December and has not recovered in time for tonight’s series-decider in Ahmedabad.

“Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right foot while batting in the nets on 16th December in Lucknow,” the BCCI medical update read. “After consulting a specialist and getting treatment with the BCCI medical team, he is improving but will be unavailable for selection for the final T20I in Ahmedabad.”

With Gill ruled out, India have drafted in Sanju Samson to open. Hardik Pandya keeps the middle order glued together, while Washington Sundar slots in as an all-round option. The need for extra batting depth nudged Kuldeep Yadav to the sidelines, allowing Bumrah to replace rookie seamer Harshit Rana without leaving the tail too long.

Suryakumar Yadav lost the toss but not his smile; South Africa captain Aiden Markram chose to chase, a call that matched India’s own preference to set a total under dry skies. Suryakumar suggested there would be “very little dew” this late in the season, a point that often sways his decision-making.

The tourists have tweaked their XI as well. George Linde, the left-arm spinner, comes in for the rested Anrich Nortje to give the attack a bit of variation, and David Miller’s experience nudges Tristan Stubbs out of the middle order.

India XI
1 Sanju Samson, 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Varun Chakravarthy, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

South Africa XI
1 Reeza Hendricks, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Aiden Markram (capt), 4 Dewald Brevis, 5 David Miller, 6 Donovan Ferreira, 7 George Linde, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Corbin Bosch, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Ottneil Baartman

Analysis in brief
– Gill’s absence removes India’s most consistent power-play scorer; Samson’s strike-rate is healthy but he is short on game-time.
– Bumrah’s return stiffens the death-overs plan, especially on a surface that can skid under lights.
– Linde v India’s left-handers (Abhishek, Tilak) may decide how many South Africa end up chasing.
