Jasprit Bumrah, standing in for the injured-again Hardik Pandya, won the toss in Dharamsala and decided Mumbai Indians would bowl first against Punjab Kings. It’s the first time he’s had the armband for MI, and he said he reckons the pitch “should calm down later on”, making a chase the safer option.
Hardik is still nursing those stubborn back spasms, while Suryakumar Yadav is away for personal reasons, so both of MI’s usual heavy-hitters stay on the sidelines. Roston Ashwin summed up the outside noise earlier in the week: “Pinning the blame on Hardik is unfair,” he told broadcasters, and that feels about right—there’s plenty that’s gone wrong for Mumbai beyond one man’s fitness.
The five-time champions are already out of the play-off picture, so tonight is mostly about pride and a look at the squad’s depth. They’ve shuffled things: Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur come in for SKY and teenager AM Ghazanfar. Rohit Sharma is listed only as an Impact sub.
Punjab, still clinging to fourth despite four straight defeats, also fancied bowling first but Shreyas Iyer must settle for setting a target instead. They’ve freshened up with three switches—Azmatullah Omarzai, quick Xavier Bartlett and left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar drafted in; Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dwarshuis and Yash Thakur left out. Brar is pencilled in as their likely Impact bowler once it’s their turn in the field.
Conditions look fair enough. A brand-new strip, square boundaries of 63 and 68 metres, 72 straight—smallish by IPL standards, so the slower balls might get some tap if batters set early.
Kings started the season unbeaten through seven; since then the wheels have wobbled. Another loss tonight would open the door for the chasing pack. Mumbai, meanwhile, are playing without the usual jeopardy, which sometimes makes them dangerous, sometimes not.
