John Campbell’s wait is over. Six years after his last one-day appearance, the Jamaican opener has been recalled for West Indies’ three-match series in New Zealand, starting in Christchurch on Sunday. Fast bowler Johann Layne and seam-bowling all-rounder Shamar Springer have received maiden ODI call-ups, while fellow quick Matthew Forde returns after recovering from a shoulder dislocation.
Those inclusions are largely the result of a swollen injury list. Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and emerging left-arm quick Jediah Blades are all unavailable, and left-armer Ramon Simmonds hasn’t recovered in time. Spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie are rested. Brandon King, whose returns of 44, 0 and 18 in Bangladesh never quite convinced, is the only omission on form.
Chief selector Desmond Haynes explained in a board release: “John has worked hard over the past 18 months and fully deserves another opportunity.” Campbell’s numbers back that up. He struck a hundred in Delhi last month during the Test tour of India and, in last season’s Super50 Cup, topped Jamaica’s charts with 278 runs at a strike rate topping 100 – the quickest of any batter among the competition’s ten leading scorers.
Layne, 22, debuted in Tests in India and earns promotion despite only a dozen List-A outings. His extra pace should complement Jayden Seales and Romario Shepherd, with Springer, Forde and Justin Greaves offering depth. “We like the balance of the attack,” bowling coach Roddy Estwick said. “Johann gives us bounce, Matthew swings it early, and Springer’s change-ups are handy at the death.”
Auguste, Carty and Athanaze keep their places after encouraging shows in Bangladesh, while Shai Hope continues as captain and first-choice wicketkeeper. Khary Pierre’s left-arm spin covers the slow-bowling department alongside Roston Chase.
The tour schedule is tight – Christchurch on Sunday, Napier on Wednesday, Hamilton next Saturday – leaving little room for error or recovery. “Touring New Zealand is always a challenge: the ball moves all day and you have to cash in when the sun’s out,” Hope noted. “But the group’s excited, especially the young lads.”
For Campbell, the motivation is simpler. “It’s just nice to be back in maroon,” he said. “Now the job is to score runs that win games.”
