Capitals choose to chase; Giants shuffle pack after Wyatt-Hodge falls ill

Jemimah Rodrigues won the toss in Vadodara and, after a quick look at a pitch she reckoned felt “a lot harder”, asked Gujarat Giants to bat first. The Delhi Capitals skipper added that on this surface the ball should come on “a little more nicely” later in the night, and with dew still a maybe-maybe-not factor decided the simpler option was to chase.

Ashleigh Gardner, who leads a Giants side that has quietly gathered some momentum, said she was content; her team would have batted first anyway. Even so, the Giants had to juggle. Danni Wyatt-Hodge woke up under the weather, so leg-spinner Georgia Wareham steps in. Left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar also returns after missing the last fixture, replacing seamer Happy Kumari. Two tweaks, both fairly like-for-like, though losing Wyatt-Hodge robs the order of early intent.

Delhi, unchanged, sit third on the table, level on six points with Gujarat but fractionally ahead on net run-rate. With only a handful of league games left, the maths is uncomplicated: win tonight and the road to the play-offs straightens; lose and calculators come out.

Delhi Capitals XI
Shafali Verma, Lizelle Lee (wk), Laura Wolvaardt, Jemimah Rodrigues (capt), Marizanne Kapp, Chinelle Henry, Niki Prasad, Minnu Mani, Sneh Rana, Shree Charani, Nandani Sharma

Gujarat Giants XI
Beth Mooney (wk), Sophie Devine, Anushka Sharma, Ashleigh Gardner (capt), Georgia Wareham, Kanika Ahuja, Bharti Fulmali, Kashvee Gautam, Tanuja Kanwar, Renuka Singh, Rajeshwari Gayakwad

Small margins separate these two. The Capitals bank on familiarity and a chasing brief; the Giants lean on spin depth and Gardner’s all-round calm. Either way, it’s an evening that could tidy up the table—if only for 24 hours.
