West Indies have announced their squad for the upcoming home Test series against Australia, with notable changes including the return of Shai Hope and John Campbell. Fast bowler Kemar Roach, despite his commendable contributions, has not made the cut for the series. Instead, the squad has been rejuvenated with fresh faces like Brandon King, Kevlon Anderson, and Johann Layne.
The third Test, set to be a day-night fixture in Jamaica, marks the start of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams. This will be the third time West Indies host a day-night Test and the second occurrence at Sabina Park.
Roach was last seen in action during West Indies’ tour to Pakistan where he played a crucial part in levelling the series. In the Bangladesh series prior, Roach scalped nine wickets across two Tests, showcasing his lasting capabilities. While recently seen in the West Indies Championship and playing for Surrey in the County Championship, Roach’s absence was addressed by Cricket West Indies who stated, “Despite being under consideration, veteran pacer Kemar Roach has not been included and has been duly informed.”
Into the squad steps Layne, a 21-year-old all-rounder from Barbados, boasting 63 first-class wickets from 17 matches. Joining him is Trinidad & Tobago’s Anderson Phillip, who thus far has made two Test appearances, and recently claimed a five-wicket haul in an unofficial Test for West Indies A against South Africa A.
Leading the spin department will be Roston Chase, the captain, and his deputy, Jomel Warrican. The playing eleven looks to strengthen its pace attack with Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph, and Shamar Joseph.
West Indies have been looking to reinvigorate their batting line-up after finishing near the bottom of the WTC table, with just three wins from 13 matches. Daren Sammy commented on the strategic changes, noting, “Brandon King’s inclusion fits a role we have identified that needs special focus to take our team to those closer to the top of the rankings.”
Returning after a period away is Campbell, who last featured in June 2022, having served a suspension related to an anti-doping violation. He returns in impressive form, finishing as Jamaica’s top run-scorer in the recent WI Championship. Meanwhile, Anderson stood out during the tournament, ending as Guyana’s leading run-scorer.
King, well recognised for his limited-overs prowess, has also been instrumental for Jamaica in domestic competitions. Hope, a seasoned campaigner with a promising average of 41.85 in Tests, is set to bolster the middle order.
Cricket West Indies’ selections clearly indicate a strategy focused on rebuilding with both experienced and prospective talents, aiming for stability and future success.
