Chivanga Steps In for Injured Gwandu in Zimbabwe Squad for England Test

Trevor Gwandu will miss Zimbabwe’s four-day Test match against England in Nottingham due to a groin injury. According to a statement from Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), Gwandu strained his left groin during a training session, ruling him out of the game.

In his place, Tanaka Chivanga has been called up. The 31-year-old fast bowler last appeared for Zimbabwe in a Test against Ireland in Belfast in July 2024. Since that match, Chivanga has been absent from Zimbabwe’s subsequent five Tests, owing to an injury he picked up during the same game. Now fit to play, Chivanga steps in eager to make an impact.

Chivanga, who has also represented Zimbabwe in 11 white-ball matches—eight One Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals—last played in December 2023. His return to the Test squad provides some much-needed reinforcement as Zimbabwe prepares for their first cricket Test in England since 2003.

The Test match, a standalone contest scheduled from 22nd to 25th May, marks Zimbabwe’s first international match in any format in England since 2004.

Zimbabwe’s squad for the Test includes: Craig Ervine (captain), Brian Bennett, Tanaka Chivanga, Ben Curran, Clive Madande (wicketkeeper), Wessly Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Victor Nyauchi, Sikandar Raza, Tafadzwa Tsiga (wicketkeeper), Nick Welch, and Sean Williams.
