Conrad Urges South Africa Players to Prioritise National Duty Over T20 Leagues

South Africa’s newly appointed all-format coach, Shukri Conrad, has called on the nation’s cricketers to put international fixtures ahead of lucrative T20 league commitments. Positioned at the helm as the Proteas prepare for next year’s T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup at home, Conrad has outlined his expectations during a press conference staged shortly after his appointment.

With international cricket schedules becoming ever busier, Conrad explained his approach: “We’re going to put out the best Proteas side every time we play,” he remarked. “I’ve had conversations with our players, all-format players and those who only play one format. There’s an expectation now: when the Proteas play, they’ll play for South Africa.”

The urgency of Conrad’s remarks is underscored by the hefty stretch of fixtures the team’s facing. They will compete continuously from mid-June to mid-December, including pivotal series like the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s, as well as tours in Pakistan and India. Contributing factors, such as overlapping schedules with Major League Cricket, the Hundred, and the Caribbean Premier League, present complex challenges. Notably, players like Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen have signed MLC retainments, and David Miller is contracted to the Hundred under a white-ball central contract.

Amidst the scheduling chaos, Conrad remains optimistic: “This comes with careful planning and buy-in from everyone,” he emphasised. “If you choose not to play for South Africa, well, then we go down that road. Our players are fully supportive of what I’m wanting to do.”

Conrad also addressed concerns about player fatigue by ensuring designated rest periods and conditioning blocks, further noting, “As recently as this morning, I chatted to some of our players at the IPL,” signifying ongoing discussions with key team members.

In an era where international teams often vie with franchises for players, Conrad’s approach, focusing on clear communication and strategic rest, aims to foster a culture where international commitments take precedence.
