South Africa won the toss at Centurion and asked West Indies to bat, making four changes as they continue to fine-tune plans for June’s T20 World Cup. Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje all come straight back after being rested for the nine-wicket win in Paarl. Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Rubin Hermann, Corbin Bosch and George Linde make way.
Captain Aiden Markram explained the call at the toss: “We’re comfortable with the balance. The extra pace up here generally helps.” Conditions on the Highveld usually favour seam, so South Africa have again opted for only one frontline spinner, preferring Keshav Maharaj to the left-arm-spin-all-round option of Linde.
A minor concern remains around Lungi Ngidi. The seamer, fit enough to be selected and on his home ground, is left out for a second straight match. He was spotted with heavy strapping during Sunday’s SA20 final, yet team management offered no further update. Teenager Kwena Maphaka therefore keeps his spot, giving South Africa two left-arm quicks alongside the pace of Nortje and Kagiso Rabada.
West Indies make a single, straightforward switch. Shai Hope returns after a “niggle” ruled him out of the opener, replacing Johnson Charles at the top of the order. Hope has recent local knowledge from his stint with Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 and should set the tone on a surface that can quicken under lights. “Nice to be back,” he said. “First job is a solid platform.”
Both camps are watching the forecast; evening showers are possible, and Duckworth-Lewis calculations can appear rapidly in Highveld storms.
Probable XIs
South Africa: Aiden Markram (capt), Quinton de Kock (wk), Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Jason Smith, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Kwena Maphaka.
West Indies: Brandon King, Shai Hope (capt, wk), Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales.
With a 1–0 lead, South Africa can clinch the three-match series tonight. West Indies, boosted by their skipper’s return, need a sharper batting display to take it to a decider.
