Dhoni Reflects on Future, Keeps Options Open

MS Dhoni, captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is contemplating his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and plans to take the next few months to make his decision. After CSK’s final match of the IPL 2025 season against the Gujarat Titans (GT), where they secured an 83-run victory, Dhoni shared his thoughts on what lies ahead.

In a post-match interview, Dhoni, who will be nearing 45 by the next IPL, stated, “I have four-five months to decide, there’s no hurry to decide what needs to be done. Every year, it’s 15% more effort to keep the body fit – not to forget this is top-level cricket.”

The decision to return hinges on three key factors for Dhoni: his fitness level, motivation, and the extent to which he can contribute to the team. He explained, “What is important is to see how much hunger you have, what kind of fitness you have, and how much you can contribute to the team, and whether the team needs you or not.”

The renowned cricketer has some time on his hands and plans to spend it in Ranchi, enjoying some bike rides before making a final decision. “I’m not saying I’m done, I’m not saying I’m coming back. As I said, I have the luxury of time,” he said.

Despite CSK finishing last in the IPL this season, they ended on a high note by achieving their largest score of the season—230 runs—against GT. The team’s bowlers, led by Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad, were instrumental in restricting the Titans to just 147 runs.

Reflecting on the season’s close, Dhoni remarked, “We didn’t have a very good season, but good to finish on a good note. I think this was one of the perfect performances – from the bowling department, batting department, not to forget the fielding and catching.”

During the presentation in Ahmedabad, fans passionately chanted “Dhoni, Dhoni”, showing their support and hoping for his return. Dhoni assumed the captaincy role mid-season after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained an elbow injury. Under his leadership, CSK have focused on nurturing young talent like Ayush Mhatre and Shaik Rasheed, along with Dewald Brevis and Urvil Patel.

Summarising CSK’s performance this season, Dhoni mentioned, “I was more worried about the batting department; at the end of the day, you have to score runs.” Despite their struggles, CSK have made moves to build a promising future around fresh faces in the squad.
