Liam Dawson is set to return to England’s T20 International side after nearly three years away, as England announce their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies. This series marks Harry Brook’s debut as the full-time captain, succeeding Jos Buttler. It’s a fresh start for the team who are looking to recover from their disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
England’s campaign kicks off with the first of three one-day internationals (ODIs) at Edgbaston on 29 May. Buttler remains a key player, coming back stronger following a successful stint in the IPL with Gujarat Titans. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone, who temporarily stood in as captain last year, doesn’t make the cut for either squad after a lacklustre performance in the Champions Trophy, scoring only 33 runs in three innings.
In terms of fast bowling, Brydon Carse rejoins the team after recovering from toe surgery, a result of his demanding performances in Test matches over the winter. Matthew Potts, included in the Test squad for the upcoming match against Zimbabwe, also features in both squads. Jofra Archer remains in the ODI lineup, partnered by Gus Atkinson, Saqib Mahmood, and Jamie Overton. However, Archer will not play in the T20I series commencing on 6 June, with Luke Wood stepping in. Wood’s return to the T20I setup is noteworthy, his first since September 2023.
Livingstone’s absence creates an opportunity for Will Jacks, who missed the Champions Trophy, to feature in both formats. Tom Banton, despite his unexpected inclusion in the Champions Trophy when Jacob Bethell was injured, secures a place in both squads. Phil Salt, on the other hand, is omitted from the ODI team, reflecting his struggle to adapt his 20-over success to the longer format. Joe Root continues as a senior batter, with Adil Rashid retained as the primary leg-spinner at 37, supported by Rehan Ahmed for the T20Is.
Significantly, Dawson’s return to the T20I lineup at 35 highlights his recent all-round accomplishments, including playing a pivotal role in two consecutive SA20 title wins with Sunrisers Eastern Cape. He was recently named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year for his performances with Hampshire in 2024. Despite not featuring for England since an ODI in Melbourne in November 2022, his recall acknowledges his exceptional form across formats.
Dawson expressed his excitement, “It’s great to be back. I’ve been working hard, and it’s rewarding to see it paying off.”
As England reshapes its squad dynamics, maintaining a balance between youth and experience, the team looks poised for a competitive series under Brook’s leadership.
