Gay, Rew and Robinson return as England refresh squad for Lord’s opener

Emilio Gay, James Rew and Ollie Robinson have all been included in a 15-strong England squad for next month’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s – the first group picked with Marcus North in the chair as national selector.

Seven players who toured Australia in the winter miss out, most obviously Zak Crawley. A mainstay of the Bazball era, Crawley averages 31.18 in Tests, yet the management kept faith until now. A lean start for Kent – 44 his best in ten attempts – has finally opened the door. Durham’s Gay, in contrast, has begun the summer in a hurry, rattling up 552 runs at 92.00 with three hundreds. “He’s earned this chance by weight of runs, plain and simple,” a source close to the panel said.

Rew joins him as an alternative opener – though his ability with the gloves means he also covers Jamie Smith. The Somerset left-hander started with a century and three fifties before a recent wobble. Even so, his progress since a prolific Championship campaign last year has been hard to ignore.

Robinson is back after more than two years in the wilderness. The Sussex seamer’s 54 Test wickets came at 20.12, but fitness concerns and an unflattering social-media past kept him on the sidelines. A winter of strength work and 18 wickets at 19 apiece this spring persuaded Brendon McCullum to make contact. Robinson admitted last month he had “received a message” from the head coach and had “never felt fitter”.

The seam attack still leans young. Gus Atkinson is expected to lead it, with Josh Tongue – 18 Ashes wickets in three Tests – offering pace. Mark Wood (elbow) and Brydon Carse (hand) remain unavailable. Somerset’s Sonny Baker and Yorkshire’s Matt Fisher complete the pace options; Fisher’s only cap came in the Caribbean two years ago, Baker is uncapped.

Rehan Ahmed, the Leicestershire leg-spinner, could make a home debut after five away Tests. Lord’s can be unforgiving for wrist-spinners early summer, yet England like his control and lower-order nerve.

In the middle order Jacob Bethell keeps his spot. His stirring Sydney hundred in January was enough, despite limited time at the crease for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. Ollie Pope, out of sorts all winter, drops out for now.

Jofra Archer’s omission had been signposted; the ECB say he is “unavailable for Test selection” while his elbow continues a measured rehab.

England squad: Ben Stokes (capt), Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, James Rew (wk), Emilio Gay, Jamie Smith (wk), Joe Root, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson, Sonny Baker, Matt Fisher, Rehan Ahmed, Jack Leach, Chris Woakes.

Key points first, then the broader picture: England have rung the changes – some forced, some overdue – without ripping everything up. The top of the order is the obvious experiment; Gay and Rew have form, but Test cricket is harsher than a chilly April in Durham or Taunton. Robinson’s return lengthens the bowling but raises familiar questions about durability. And Ahmed’s inclusion suggests a willingness to pick two spinners if early-season pitches allow.

North has talked about “balance between loyalty and performance”. This squad shows the line he intends to walk. If it feels ruthless in places – Crawley, Pope – the door is not locked. A quick start against New Zealand and the new names stick; a slow one and the carousel begins again. That, for better or worse, is the modern England way.
