Glamorgan have moved quickly to plug the gap that Sam Northeast will leave this winter, confirming the capture of Sean Dickson on a deal that runs until the end of the 2027 season.
The 34-year-old right-hander will swap Taunton for Sophia Gardens once Somerset’s summer is done, becoming the Welsh county’s fourth senior signing in as many years. Kent and Durham supporters will remember his earlier stops; Glamorgan hope the next one is just as productive.
Dickson’s recent form backs up the decision. On Saturday he lashed 71 from only 26 balls against Birmingham Bears, steering Somerset into Vitality Blast Finals Day. In first-class cricket his top score remains the marathon 318 he compiled for Kent back in 2017 – still one of 14 centuries, 13 of them made in England since the South Africa-born batter settled here in 2015.
Northeast, meanwhile, is bound for his original county Kent, leaving Glamorgan short of experience at the top of the order as they push for promotion from Division Two. Dickson offers cover across formats: a destructive middle-order option in white-ball cricket, a steady presence in the top four when the red ball is used.
Glamorgan’s director of cricket, Mark Wallace, explained the thinking: “We’re delighted that Sean has agreed to join Glamorgan for the next two years. Sean is one of the most explosive middle-order T20 batters in the country and is a proven top four option in four-day cricket.
“With Sam Northeast heading back to Kent, Sean will add to the experience of our batting unit and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Wales.”
For Glamorgan supporters the equation is simple enough. Lose one proven run-scorer, gain another, while spreading the age profile of the squad. Dickson, still hungry for trophies, gets regular cricket in all formats. Time will tell whether the fit is perfect, but on paper – and given Saturday’s evidence – the move looks sensible for both parties.
