Hazlewood’s Timely Comeback for RCB’s IPL 2025 Playoffs

Josh Hazlewood, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) standout bowler this IPL season, is back in action just in time for the crucial stages of the tournament. The Australian paceman had been sidelined with a shoulder injury and returned home during the league’s temporary halt due to cross-border tensions. Following a successful rehabilitation period Down Under, Hazlewood is ready to make an impact as the IPL 2025 playoffs approach.

Despite missing several matches, Hazlewood has claimed 18 wickets in just ten games, boasting an impressive average and economic figures, affirming his role as RCB’s leading bowler. His recovery included sessions in Brisbane, preparing alongside the Australian team for the upcoming World Test Championship final against South Africa.

RCB, already qualified for the playoffs, stumbled slightly with a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, which complicated, but did not end, their bid for a top-two finish. The position guarantees teams two attempts at reaching the final. “The good thing for RCB is that they will play the last game and they will know exactly where they stand and what they need to do,” noted former India captain Anil Kumble on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show after their recent defeat.

Hazlewood’s return couldn’t be more timely, providing a needed boost as RCB faces Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match. His impact is underscored by Kumble’s remarks about RCB knowing what is needed in their last game, setting the stage for strategic planning.

While Hazlewood was recuperating, Lungi Ngidi filled in but didn’t quite replicate the same level of success. As Ngidi departs for national duty with South Africa, RCB considers other options; however, neither Nuwan Thushara nor replacement player Blessing Muzarabani bring significant IPL experience.

Previously hindered by an injury-riddled home summer, Hazlewood’s forthcoming participation in the World Test Championship final suggests he’s poised to reclaim a starting spot in the Australian Test team, potentially at the expense of Scott Boland.

In a twist of fate, the IPL, despite his injury setbacks, has offered Hazlewood a chance to shine again. As RCB gears up for high-stakes encounters, his presence can undeniably tip the scales in their favour.
