Head wins toss, Australia bat first as Marsh sidelined by groin injury

Australia’s World Cup campaign began with an early jolt: Mitchell Marsh was ruled out moments before the opener against Ireland after a training blow to the groin led to testicular bleeding. With Marsh unavailable and Tim David still being eased back from a hamstring strain, Travis Head had just 12 fit players to choose from – and he’s captaining as well.

Head called correctly and, without fuss, chose to bat. “Looks like a good wicket,” he said. “The Pakistan series didn’t go our way, but what’s important is this tournament.” Josh Inglis moves up to open alongside Head, a job he last did in the BBL rather than for Australia, but needs must. Cooper Connolly comes in to bulk up a spin-heavy attack that also includes fellow left-armer Matt Kuhnemann. The spare pacer Ben Dwarshuis is the unlucky omission.

The selection gamble, then, is obvious: Connolly’s off-spin and Kuhnemann’s orthodox left-arm could be handy if the Guyana surface grips, yet Australia are light on seam back-up should the pitch skid on. Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett have the new ball, Adam Zampa is the banker through the middle, and the rest looks a little patch-and-paint. Not ideal, but not unheard-of at these tournaments either.

Ireland, beaten by Sri Lanka first up, keep faith with the same XI. Skipper Paul Stirling admitted he would also have batted first: “It helps we know the conditions and how the pitch will do,” he said. “Gives us a fraction of an advantage.” The question is whether that sliver of local knowledge offsets Australia’s higher ceiling – even minus Marsh.

On paper Australia still look stronger, yet the margin for error is slimmer than usual. If Inglis and Head don’t set a base, the middle order quickly reaches Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell, both in patchy touch. And with only one spare body on the bench, any fresh niggle could turn into a headache.
