Simon Helmot, who guided the Melbourne Renegades to their first Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title last season, has extended his coaching contract for another three years. He has an extensive background in men’s cricket globally, both domestically and at franchise levels, and took the reins of the Renegades’ WBBL team four years ago.
His initial seasons with the club were a mixed bag, but the past year saw significant triumph as the Renegades claimed their historic title under his leadership alongside captain Sophie Molineux.
Reflecting on the success, Helmot expressed his enthusiasm: “Last season was an incredibly special one for our playing group and staff, and I’m thrilled to be continuing as head coach,” he said. He credited the strong leadership within the club, mentioning both the general manager, James Rosengarten, and Sophie Molineux. “Winning a title is never easy, which makes being part of this group all the more special.”
The team retains its ambition with a solid foundation of committed players. While the Renegades have re-signed West Indies allrounder Hayley Matthews, they are currently in negotiations with Molineux and Australia star Georgia Wareham, whose contracts are yet to be finalised. The team has also acquired promising Victoria allrounder Tess Flintoff from the Melbourne Stars but bid farewell to Victorian players Ella Hayward and Georgia Prestwidge, who have transferred to their local rivals.
In another coaching move, Rob Cassell joins as an assistant coach for the men’s Big Bash League team under Cameron White. Cassell, who was Tasmania men’s bowling coach, has been appointed the new men’s bowling coach for Victoria, succeeding Adam Griffith, Australia’s current national fast bowling coach. Cassell is well-regarded in cricket circles and has previously worked with Australia’s men’s team, particularly when senior coach Daniel Vettori was unavailable.
With these strategic movements, the Renegades aim to build on their recent success and stamp their authority further in the league.
