The International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested additional information from Cricket Canada concerning allegations of theft and fraud against its newly appointed CEO, Salman Khan. These allegations stem from incidents purported to have occurred during Khan’s presidency of the Calgary and District Cricket League (CDCL) between 2014 and 2016. Calgary Police charged Khan in March, along with the CDCL treasurer, related to the alleged misappropriation of approximately CAD $200,000 during that period.
Khan, who took up the role at Cricket Canada in January, has strongly refuted these accusations. Despite his denials, the ICC intends to “consider the matter further,” seeking clarity on several points. ICC’s general manager of development, William Glenwright, signed a letter to Cricket Canada, which poses four crucial questions:
1. What recruitment process was used by Cricket Canada to hire their new CEO?
2. Were any board members aware of the allegations against Khan during his recruitment?
3. If they were unaware initially, when did Cricket Canada learn of the allegations?
4. What measures, if any, have Cricket Canada undertaken in response?
While the ICC’s request currently remains informational, it hints that several sections of the ICC’s code of ethics could be involved, particularly those pertaining to transparency and disclosure of potentially impacting issues during decision-making processes at the ICC Board level.
In response to the allegations, Khan took to Facebook with his stance: “I see many fake and self-created posts circulating around, and I want to set the record straight. First of all, these are all fake. I have never been arrested, detained, or on any bail. These claims are completely false, and those spreading these rumours will have to answer for it. They have nothing to prove against me.”
Khan further stated his readiness to continue fighting the allegations, maintaining that there was no proof of his involvement after seven years of inquiries. This firm denial reflects his determination as the investigation continues.
The developing situation leaves Cricket Canada and the ICC navigating complex ethical territory, as all parties await further information.
