India Deliberates Bumrah’s Role in England Test Series

India are yet to finalise which of the five Tests in England will feature Jasprit Bumrah, but captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir are confident in their squad’s fast-bowling depth, ensuring coverage during Bumrah’s potential absences.

“We haven’t taken that call, which three games is he going to play,” Gambhir stated at a press briefing in Mumbai before the team’s departure. He emphasised that the decision would involve discussions with Bumrah and depend on the course of the series. “A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important,” he added.

The caution surrounding Bumrah’s participation stems from advice given by medical staff. After a back issue during January’s Test against Australia, he rejoined play following an absence, missing the start of the Indian Premier League 2025 with Mumbai Indians.

The Test squad of 18 includes fast bowlers such as Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh. All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur provide additional seam options.

Gill expressed confidence, stating, “I think we have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery…any position.” He acknowledged that Bumrah’s presence is valued but was reassured by the squad’s collective strength.

Reflecting on past experiences, Gambhir noted, “I have said it before during the Champions Trophy…it will give someone the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent there.”

This series follows the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, and Virat Kohli. It also marks the start of India’s campaign in the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Their tour includes matches at iconic venues such as Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. Preparations begin with a four-day encounter against India A in Beckenham from 13th June.

The anticipation builds as India strategise for a series without stalwarts while integrating emerging talents at international staples.
