IPL 2026 pencilled in for late-March start, ends 31 May

News

IPL 2026 is now locked into the familiar 26 March-31 May slot, the BCCI confirmed on Monday. The dates fall three weeks after the men’s T20 World Cup, which runs from 7 February to 8 March across India and Sri Lanka, giving players a short breather before the franchise season begins.

That timetable again puts the IPL head-to-head with the Pakistan Super League, slated for 26 March-3 May. One team analyst admitted, “We’d all prefer clean windows, but the calendar is packed and nobody’s budging.”

Auction first, fixtures later
The league will stage its player auction on 16 December in Abu Dhabi. Exactly 369 names remain on the long list, with 77 vacancies overall—31 of them for overseas cricketers. Kolkata Knight Riders hold the thickest wallet at INR 64.30 crore (about £5.9 million) and have 13 slots to fill; Sunrisers Hyderabad follow with ten. Chennai Super Kings sit on INR 43.40 crore (£4.0 million) and, as one CSK insider put it, “a clear shopping list and not much time to haggle”.

Recent history still lingers
Last season’s IPL was due to run from 22 March to 25 May before political tensions between India and Pakistan forced a week-long pause. Play eventually resumed on 15 May and finished on 3 June.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally lifted their first title, edging Punjab Kings by six runs in a tight Ahmedabad final. Celebrations back home were cut short when 11 supporters died amid stampede-like scenes outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. An independent panel later branded the ground “unsafe” for large crowds, and local officials say remedial work is ongoing.

Scheduling pinch points
Administrators insist the late-March window is here to stay. BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated last month, “The current slot balances international commitments and broadcaster needs.” Player agents are less certain. One, speaking off the record, warned of fatigue: “A World Cup, then straight into nine weeks of IPL travel—expect more rotation.”

For now, franchises are finalising shortlists, fans are discussing purse maths, and the sport braces for another congested spring. The fixtures list should drop early in the new year; the debate over calendar space will probably roll on a good deal longer.
