Isani Vaghela barred from bowling after action deemed illegal

USA all-rounder Isani Vaghela has been banned from bowling in international cricket after the ICC ruled her action illegal during last month’s Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Nepal.

Match officials first reported Vaghela during the United States’ defeat to Ireland. The ICC’s Event Panel then analysed footage from her next outing – a narrow win over Papua New Guinea – and confirmed the infringement.

“The panel concluded that the degree of elbow extension in Vaghela’s deliveries exceeded the 15-degree limit permitted under the regulations,” the ICC said in a brief statement. “Accordingly, she is suspended from bowling in international matches with immediate effect.”

That suspension will stand until the 20-year-old medium-pacer remodels her action and passes an independent re-assessment. It is the same procedure followed in recent years by the likes of Sunil Narine and Kyle Jamieson, so there is a well-trodden path back if she can make the technical adjustments.

Vaghela, who debuted in T20Is in 2021 and ODIs in 2024, has taken 31 wickets in 39 T20 internationals and four more in six ODIs. Her batting, while promising, has not yet cemented her place, so the loss of her bowling threatens her spot in the XI for the foreseeable future.

USA head coach Shivnarine Chanderpaul, speaking before the ruling became public, admitted the management had been working on her action. “We’ve already done a bit of video work with Isani,” he said. “She’s keen to sort it out, and the support staff are right behind her.”

Fast-bowling consultant Cathryn Fitzpatrick added: “It’s never easy for a young player to be told she has to change something that’s brought success, but plenty of bowlers have come back stronger. The key is patience and good biomechanical advice.”

From a team perspective, the timing is awkward. The United States finished the Super Six stage of the qualifier with one win and missed out on this summer’s main event in England and Wales. Losing their leading seam option removes a layer of experience just as they look to rebuild.

There is no fixed timetable for a return. Once Vaghela feels comfortable with her remodelled action, she can request a test at an ICC-accredited facility. If the elbow extension is shown to be within the legal limit, the suspension will be lifted immediately.

For now, she remains available as a batter and fielder. That said, the USA set-up will want one of its few established bowlers back at full capacity as soon as possible.
