Jonassen steps aside as Queensland and Heat skipper

Jess Jonassen has opted to hand over the captaincy of both Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat, ending a five-year stretch that began when she replaced Kirby Short in 2020. The decision comes only a few weeks after the left-arm spinner returned from shoulder surgery, an injury that forced her out of the recent WBBL campaign.

Georgia Redmayne filled in during Jonassen’s absence and, by all accounts, will be among the contenders to take on the role full-time. For now, the 33-year-old allrounder says stepping back is the right call for everyone involved.

“I did have every intention of wanting to lead again this season, but the NSW trip helped open my eyes to a number of things and has helped me come to this decision,” Jonassen explained. “I am very grateful for the past five years and to those who showed faith in me being the person to help lead these teams forward.”

She added: “When I sat down and thought hard about what was best for the future, I realised I could no longer give my all in the role. I know this is the best decision for both me and the team. I’m very much looking forward to finishing my career as a senior player who leads from within and will support whoever gets the opportunity to lead these teams next.”

Jonassen’s record remains impressive despite recent frustrations. She is still the leading wicket-taker in WBBL history and has stayed active on the global T20 circuit, turning out in the WPL, the Hundred, and the WCPL. Even so, she has not featured for Australia since 2023, prompting questions about the next phase of her international career.

“Looking back, as a kid, I never thought I’d ever call myself a captain of Queensland but it’s something I’m proud of and I hope I’ve made a difference somewhere in my time,” she reflected.

Heat endured a torrid WBBL season, failing to win a game and finishing bottom. Queensland’s fortunes have been brighter; two matches against Victoria this week will decide whether they reach the WNCL final against New South Wales.
