Ishan Kishan will slot in at first drop for Wednesday’s opening T20I against New Zealand in Nagpur, captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed on match-eve. Tilak Varma’s side strain has opened the spot, yet the call is more about February’s home World Cup than a one-off injury replacement.
“We’ve picked him for the World Cup, so it’s his turn to play,” Suryakumar said.
Kishan last appeared for India during the November 2023 series against Australia and has since stacked up runs for Jharkhand. The selectors view him as Rishabh Pant’s understudy behind the stumps and a left-hand option in the top four, roles deemed essential on slower, turning February pitches.
Shreyas Iyer had been the obvious back-up: he is in this three-match series squad but not in the 15-man World Cup party. Suryakumar admitted that scenario left the management juggling short-term form with longer-term strategy. “If we needed someone lower down, maybe we would have made another choice,” he conceded.
Why Kishan at No.3? The think-tank likes a right-left combination after the openers, and it keeps Virat Kohli fresher for the finishing act at No.4. Former India assistant coach Sanjay Bangar believes the move is logical. “Kishan gives you momentum straightaway and he doubles up as the spare keeper. That’s two boxes ticked,” Bangar told the host broadcaster.
New Zealand, arriving without Trent Boult and Kane Williamson, see the series as an audition for their younger quicks. Tim Southee expects a trial by spin from India but feels Kishan can be contained. “He likes width; take that away and you’re in the game,” Southee noted.
For Kishan, the immediate task is simpler: play a substantial T20I innings after fourteen months on the sidelines. A solid start could cement his place for the World Cup opener in Delhi on 7 February, while also nudging Iyer down the pecking order.
