KKR bat first, minus Narine and Varun, against unchanged Punjab

Kolkata – Missing both of their celebrated “mystery” spinners, Kolkata Knight Riders decided to put runs on the board and will bat first against Punjab Kings this afternoon. Ajinkya Rahane confirmed at the toss that Varun Chakravarthy has a bruised hand – “nothing too serious, just bad timing” – while Sunil Narine woke up unwell.

It is the first time since 2019 that Kolkata take the field without either bowler. Rovman Powell walks straight into the middle order for his first appearance of the campaign, and Navdeep Saini, last seen in the IPL back in 2023, is handed a KKR cap. Anukul Roy is now the lone spinner in the XI; there is no slow-bowling cover among the Impact subs.

Rahane explained the thinking briskly: “The rain knocked out practice for both sides yesterday, but the surface still feels dryish. We’d rather set a target and trust our quicks later on.”

Only three of the opening 11 matches this season have been won by teams batting first, yet Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer sounded happy enough. “We were hoping to chase, so the toss went our way,” he said. His side is unchanged and, once again, youngster Priyansh Arya is likely to be activated once the chase begins.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch, speaking on the host broadcaster, reckons Punjab’s consistency is no accident: “Under Ricky Ponting they’ve stuck to simple, clear plans – pick a side, back it, no fuss.” Analyst Gaurav Sundararaman agreed, adding that the Kings “rarely tinker unless conditions absolutely demand it”.

Teams
Kolkata Knight Riders: Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rovman Powell, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Navdeep Saini, Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi.
Impact options: Manish Pandey, Rahul Tripathi, Blessing Muzarabani, Tejasvi Singh, Saurabh Dubey.

Punjab Kings: Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (capt), Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Impact options: Suryansh Shedge, Vishnu Vinod, Pravin Dubey, Priyansh Arya, Harpreet Brar.

A dryish deck, a damp build-up and two mystery spinners in the sick bay – hardly ideal for Kolkata, yet they have chosen to take the initiative. Whether those missing overs of guile hurt them later on should make for a revealing watch.
