KKR choose to chase as Hardik and Suryakumar slot back in for MI

Kolkata – Ajinkya Rahane won a damp-weather toss at Eden Gardens and, without hesitation, sent Mumbai Indians in for the penultimate group game both sides still call must-win.

“We’ll bowl first. The surface was under covers most of yesterday and there should be movement up top,” Rahane said on the host broadcaster. Opposite number Hardik Pandya, back after a brief side strain, nodded: “No complaints. Put runs on the board and the rest is straightforward.”

KKR remain alive only because five victories in their last six have kept them just inside the play-off conversation. To extend that storyline they still need two more wins and a little outside help – Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings must trip over the finishing line.

Selection trends followed the form book. Varun Chakravarthy was passed fit after a fortnight nursing a groin niggle and goes straight in. With Matheesha Pathirana ruled out (hamstring), Kolkata opted for additional batting power and drafted in Rovman Powell. Cameron Green therefore becomes the sixth-bowling option, no longer a novelty in modern T20 but still handy on a heavy outfield.

Ryan Rickelton keeps wicket for Mumbai, while Suryakumar Yadav – fresh from a short rest for an ankle twinge – resumes at No.3. Pandya’s own return pushes Will Jacks down to a floating role. Rookie leg-spinner AM Ghazanfar is listed among the substitutes and looks the obvious Impact Player should the pitch slow later on. “He’s shown real control in training,” MI bowling coach Shane Bond said before play, “and that’s priceless on a used strip.”

Eden has been wet for 48 hours, so the new-ball spell feels decisive. Jasprit Bumrah versus Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi in a chase could be equally so, although KKR will lean heavily on Sunil Narine’s all-round nous. “Sunil gives you 24 carats of certainty,” former India spinner Pragyan Ojha remarked on radio. “If the rest stay calm, the equation is simple.”
