Klinger Adds Batting Expertise to Gulf Giants Back-room Team

Michael Klinger will guide Gulf Giants’ batters in the next ILT20 campaign, the franchise confirming the Australian’s appointment only a few weeks after Simon Helmot replaced Jonathan Trott as head coach.

Klinger slots into a reshuffled support staff: Kadeer Ali comes in to look after the fielding, while Zimbabwe’s Gary Brent has the strength-and-conditioning brief. They join Shane Bond (bowling), James Pipe (physio) and analyst Saurabh Walkar, giving Helmot a staff that is more or less brand-new from top to tail.

A short recap helps explain the changes. Gulf Giants lifted the inaugural ILT20 trophy in 2023 but have stalled since: no finals appearance in 2024-25 and a fifth-place finish last season. A shake-up felt inevitable.

Announcing the moves, the franchise stated: “Klinger brings extensive experience as both a player and coach,” and added that he “is well acquainted with [the group’s] high-performance environment and player development approach”. The link is obvious: Adani Sportsline, the Giants’ owners, also employ Klinger at Gujarat Giants in the WPL.

Klinger sounded keen to get stuck in: “This is an exciting opportunity to join another team within the group. Gulf Giants have strong foundations and I’m looking forward to working closely with Simon and the rest of the staff to help build a solid unit that can make a big impact in the new season.”

His coaching résumé is broad, stretching from the BBL’s Melbourne Renegades to Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket, with stints in the Hundred on the women’s side as well. Kadeer, meanwhile, has earned a solid reputation at Worcestershire and with Birmingham Phoenix, especially for the work he has done with younger players.

Helmot himself arrived in May after parting ways with the Renegades, two years early on his deal there. With Trott gone after a single season, the Giants have not shied away from tough calls. Whether this new coaching blend lifts the side back into the title picture will be tested soon enough – the next ILT20 draft is only a few weeks away.
