Ravi Shastri had a candid conversation with Virat Kohli shortly before the latter announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking a significant shift in the cricketing landscape. Shastri, who served as India’s head coach for a substantial part of Kohli’s captaincy, affirmed that Kohli leaves with no remorse, believing he still has much to offer in ODIs and franchise leagues.
“I did speak to him about it [his announcement], I think a week before that and his mind was very clear that he’d given us everything,” Shastri revealed in an interview with The ICC Review. “There were no regrets… The mind has told his body that it’s time to go.”
Kohli ends his Test career with 30 centuries in 123 matches, spanning 14 years. As India’s most successful Test captain, his decision came amidst the challenges of maintaining high performance across formats, leading him to prioritise limited-overs cricket.
Shastri acknowledged the immense burden and intensity that Kohli carried on his shoulders. “He doesn’t have regrets. Ideally, everyone might want him to carry on. But then, he looks at the bigger picture,” Shastri mentioned. “That much involvement, there’s going to be a burnout somewhere if he doesn’t take a rest.”
Robin Uthappa also weighed in on Kohli’s retirement, noting his focus on team victories over personal milestones. This sentiment is echoed by many who have followed Kohli’s spirited on-field antics and leadership style.
Kohli’s tenure as captain left a lasting impression, not just through his accomplishments but also by invigorating India’s approach to Test cricket with his expressive and intense demeanour. Shastri remarked on Kohli’s ability to captivate audiences globally, stating, “He’s got accolades around the globe. He has a bigger following than any other cricketer in the last decade.”
Kohli’s retirement may signal the end of a prolific phase in Indian cricket, yet it also paves the way for his continued influence in shorter formats. As fans and colleagues reflect on his legacy, Kohli’s departure reminds us of both the physical and mental demands of the game.
