Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper-batter, Kusal Mendis, is stepping into the IPL spotlight as he joins the Gujarat Titans (GT) for the playoffs, taking over from Jos Buttler. This marks Mendis’s debut appearance in the IPL, which is an exciting development for his career.
Mendis had been actively participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with Quetta Gladiators, showcasing his talent as a wicketkeeper-batter until last week, with his last game for the team on May 7. However, due to concerns about safety and security, he is not returning to Pakistan for the remainder of the PSL season, confirmed by ESPNcricinfo.
Buttler will be absent from the IPL playoffs as he’s been selected for England’s ODI series against the West Indies, starting on 29th May, coinciding with the IPL playoff schedule.
GT has two other options for the wicketkeeper position—Anuj Rawat and Kumar Kushagra. Even so, Mendis’s recent performance in the PSL, where he scored 143 runs with a striking rate of 168 over five matches, makes him an appealing choice for the team. His inclusion in IPL setups, even as a replacement, is notable since despite many attempts, he’d never been picked in the IPL auction before. Mendis is reportedly awaiting his visa to join the squad, aiming for a Saturday arrival.
Currently leading the IPL table on points alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru, GT has a better net run rate. Securing just one more victory will ensure their spot in the playoffs.
The shift to the IPL signifies a crucial opportunity for Mendis, underscoring his rising profile in the international cricket scene. Despite the challenges of moving leagues mid-season, Mendis’s consistent form suggests he might just be the addition GT needs to bolster their playoff campaign.
