Leicestershire have turned to Yadvinder Singh for early-season cover, signing the right-arm seamer on a short deal that runs through April. The 30-year-old was let go by Worcestershire last September and has been training at Grace Road all winter.
Singh’s route back into county cricket has not been straightforward. After coming through the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) he made a lively Championship debut for Worcestershire at The Oval in April 2024, taking 4 for 103 and removing both Surrey openers. Chances after that were thin, but the Foxes have space in their seam unit and see value in a fresh option.
“I’m really pleased to be given this opportunity with Leicestershire,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my time training with the squad and I’m excited to contribute over the first part of the season.”
Head coach Alfonso Thomas echoed the sentiment. “Yadvinder has been with us over the winter and has impressed with both his skill and attitude. With a few injuries in our seam group, it’s a good opportunity for him and he adds important depth to the squad at the start of the season.”
Tom Brown, SACA’s managing director, hopes this stint becomes something longer. “We are thrilled that Yaddy has another opportunity to make his mark in the professional game. He will have a great chance at Leicestershire to prove that he has what it takes to perform at this level.”
From Leicestershire’s angle the arrangement is low risk: one month to see if Singh can repeat the rhythm he showed two seasons ago. For the bowler it is precious time with the red ball, a fresh chance to translate winter nets into wickets, and perhaps secure a contract that extends beyond the opening block of matches.
