In his debut press conference as Bangladesh’s T20I captain, Litton Das emphasised the importance of clear communication and achieving results. His appointment comes in the wake of Najmul Hossain Shanto’s resignation due to a dip in form after being named captain across formats in early 2024. Litton, who led Bangladesh to a 3-0 series win against the West Indies in Shanto’s absence due to injury, acknowledges both the challenges and opportunities of his new role.
Speaking to the press, Litton made his position clear: “I am not going to talk about a particular brand of cricket,” he stated. His focus lies with adapting strategies according to different match situations. He added, “We might need to chase 180-200 in some games. Then we will have to chase 140-145 in other games. The ultimate goal is to win the game.”
Litton stressed the significance of his team understanding their roles, saying, “A player must understand what the team needs from him. It is more important for the player to know how to win a game, rather than stick to a brand of cricket.”
Recently, Litton has been absent from the national side, missing out on selection for the ODI squad before the Champions Trophy and a thumb injury sidelining him from the Pakistan Super League. However, his recent performances in domestic leagues demonstrate a resurgence in form. With 368 runs in the Bangladesh Premier League and successive half-centuries for Gulshan CC in the Dhaka Premier League, he seems optimistic about reintegrating into the side successfully. Reflecting on his form, he remarked, “I was not [among the] runs at that time but since then I have tried to get back to form.”
Litton is optimistic about his long-term appointment, seeing it as a chance to shape the team effectively. “It is certainly positive to be appointed on a long-term basis,” he said. “I have to organise the team my way. The players that I have, together we can do something good for the team.”
Additionally, Litton offered his praise for the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision to appoint Mahedi Hasan, an indication that he values the support system around him as he takes on this leadership role.
