Sunrisers Hyderabad have moved quickly to plug a hole in their pace stocks, signing Sri Lankan left-armer Dilshan Madushanka for the rest of IPL 2026 after Brydon Carse failed to recover from a hand injury. An IPL release confirmed, “Dilshan Madushanka will join Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 75 lakh,” bringing the 25-year-old into the tournament for the first time.
Carse damaged his right hand while batting in the nets on the eve of the season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Head coach Daniel Vettori initially sounded upbeat about a swift return, but the medical update remained stubbornly unchanged and the franchise could not wait any longer.
Madushanka’s résumé is light on IPL experience – none, in fact – yet respectable at international level: one Test, 28 ODIs and 19 T20Is, 70 wickets across formats, and decent pace from a left-arm angle that SRH presently lack. He was on Mumbai Indians’ books in 2024 before a hamstring strain cut that stint short.
Bowling depth has been a talking point in Hyderabad. Pat Cummins is only just back from injury, while Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat have struggled to land their variations. Those concerns prompted debuts for rookies Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain against Rajasthan Royals on Monday; both grabbed four-fors, steering SRH to a 57-run win that steadied the campaign.
Even so, two victories from five leave the side fourth on the ladder and searching for consistency. The hope inside the camp is that Madushanka’s skiddy new-ball spell and change-of-pace options – cutters, slower bouncers, the lot – give Cummins an extra tool and ease the workload on the rest.
Madushanka is expected to link up with the squad later this week once the paperwork clears.
