Mayank Yadav Out of IPL 2025 with Back Injury; Replacements Announced

Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) fast bowler Mayank Yadav has been sidelined for the remainder of IPL 2025 due to another back injury. In response, LSG secured New Zealand pacer Will O’Rourke for INR 3 crore as his replacement.

Before this setback, Mayank was one of three players retained by LSG for the season. His return to competitive cricket, having been out since October 2024, saw him play just two matches—against Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings (PBKS)—prior to the tournament’s suspension due to geopolitical issues between India and Pakistan. His ability to bowl at high speeds, which once earned him a specialised contract as a fast bowler, was diminished following the injury and a bizarre toe injury at home. Although he worked on his recovery at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he returned with reduced pace, averaging in the high-130 kph range.

LSG mentor Zaheer Khan commented, “We were in constant dialogue with the NCA and adhered to the prescribed regimen.”

For O’Rourke, this marks his first foray into the T20 franchise world. Since debuting in T20I for New Zealand against Pakistan last year, he’s taken five wickets in five matches and has appeared in ten Tests and 17 ODIs.

In parallel news, Kyle Jamieson, another New Zealand seamer, has replaced compatriot Lockie Ferguson at PBKS. Ferguson’s stint included four matches where he claimed five wickets before an injury forced his exit after just two balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. PBKS bowling coach James Hopes noted that Ferguson would be “out indefinitely.” Jamieson, who previously played for RCB in 2021, comes at a cost of INR 2 crore.

Also noteworthy is Gujarat Titans’ signing of Kusal Mendis as a stand-in for Jos Buttler, with Buttler expected to leave for international duty with England post-league stage. Mendis was acquired for INR 75 lakh and will boost GT’s playoff campaign.

This season has certainly tested the depth and resilience of IPL teams, as replacements and strategic adjustments continue amid player withdrawals.
