In the run-up to the IPL playoffs, Mumbai Indians (MI) face the challenge of adapting their batting strategy following key player departures. Losing Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks to national commitments poses a challenge, but cricket expert Tom Moody remains optimistic. During a conversation on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out, Moody suggested that bringing in Jonny Bairstow and Charith Asalanka promises a fresh boost.
Moody shared, “The arrival of fresh players can sometimes be exactly what’s needed. It allows the team to move on from events like the Punjab Kings match, where things didn’t quite click.”
Bairstow’s experience in the IPL positions him as a valuable addition. Having performed well for Yorkshire, he arrives in decent form. Asalanka, with his solid record for Sri Lanka, is another promising prospect. Moody noted, “Asalanka is a strong player of spin and can contribute with the ball as well. Their inclusion doesn’t disrupt MI’s dynamics but rather enhances them.”
In contrast, Wasim Jaffer holds a more cautious view. He stresses that MI’s Indian players should shoulder the batting responsibility, particularly during the powerplay. He voiced concerns about Bairstow’s recent lack of white-ball play, thanks to his focus on red-ball cricket in England’s challenging conditions. Jaffer remarked, “The Indian players need to step up. Bairstow hasn’t shone in recent IPL seasons and adjusting from red-ball to white-ball could be tricky.”
Particularly under scrutiny is Tilak Varma, whose recent form has been inconsistent. Having been retired out once this season by management, Varma recently notched consecutive fifties but averages only 10.75 in his last five innings. With Jacks now absent, there’s an opportunity for Varma to return to a higher batting position and find his rhythm.
Jaffer insists, “Tilak needs to exploit this chance to bat freely. His potential is undeniable, but he must rise to the occasion for MI to maximise their roster adjustments.”
As MI prepare to face either Gujarat Titans or Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Eliminator, their batting approach will certainly be tested. While Moody’s confidence in fresh energy is notable, the pressure for consistent Indian performances remains vital. This blend of international flair and home-grown grit could determine MI’s fate in the playoffs.
