Mitchell Marsh, often remembered for unfortunate injuries, is making waves in IPL 2025 with a fresh approach. Marsh’s transition to a specialist batter at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) appears to have set him free, as Tom Moody describes it as Marsh getting “the golden ticket.”
Moody shares with ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out, “I think firstly, he is fit. In previous seasons, Mitch Marsh would start but soon find himself injured. That was largely due to the workload of being an allrounder. Now he bowls no longer, focusing solely on batting and not even fielding. He’s understood his game over the last three to four years and knows what he needs to bring to the party.”
Marsh’s performance reflects this change, particularly with his 64-ball 117 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. This takes his tally to 560 runs from 12 innings, earning him a spot among the Orange Cap contenders despite LSG missing the playoffs.
While Marsh’s injury history may have worried LSG, acquiring him for INR 3.40 crore (approximately US$ 0.40 million) proved to be savvy. Aakash Chopra notes, “He was bought cheap – a steal – and that sometimes fuels you. His shot selection has improved, and on the Ekana pitch, which suits him, he hits big. When his sixes go, they stay gone.”
Marsh’s powerful hits, including multiple sixes straight down the ground, stand out. Varun Aaron observes, “He addressed his previous issues with balls coming into him, whereby he often got out lbw or bowled. He’s now maintaining his shape better, hitting powerfully down the ground.”
Moody elaborates, “When Mitch is in form, he’s devastating. You can’t bowl the short ball to him without consequence. His ability to smash the ball towards the sight screen makes him tough to bowl against, leaving bowlers with limited options.”
This season, Marsh’s refined focus and capability highlight why he’s such a formidable presence on the field. It’s a transformation that serves as a testament to how specialising can unlock potential.
