Mohammad Amir Returns to Essex for Vitality Blast

Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler, is set to return to Essex for the upcoming Vitality Blast campaign. Amir, now 33, previously played with the county side from 2017 to 2019, where he made a notable impact by taking 24 wickets in 21 matches. His performance in 2019 was particularly impressive, with 10 dismissals at an average of 20.10. That year, Essex celebrated a double triumph, winning both the County Championship and the Blast final.

For Pakistan, Amir has been a prominent figure in T20 internationals, claiming 71 wickets in 62 matches, with a bowling average of 21.64, up to the World Cup held in June last year. Recently, he played for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, taking seven wickets in six games.

Expressing his enthusiasm upon rejoining Essex, Amir remarked, “I am very excited to join Essex once again. I have always enjoyed my time at this club where I feel at home, and the love I received from the team and the amazing supporters was overwhelming. I look forward to contributing to the team and hopefully help the club achieve success this season.”

Chris Silverwood, who was instrumental in bringing Amir to the club during his first tenure as head coach in 2017, now serves as Essex’s director of cricket. Silverwood shared his excitement about Amir’s return, saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Mo back to Chelmsford and are very excited to see him in Essex colours again. I know the experience and skillset he brings having worked with him here before. He will certainly strengthen what is an already strong squad for our T20 Blast campaign this season.”

Amir, set to don the No.5 jersey, is committed to Essex for the entire group stage. There remains a possibility of extending his tenure if the club advances to the knockout stages.
