Morkel Praises Bumrah’s Form Ahead of England Tour

Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has expressed his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah’s performance, noting he’s been “blown away” by the bowler’s rhythm and intensity during their preparations in England. However, Morkel emphasised the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload carefully throughout the summer due to his previous back injuries.

Before the tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir indicated that Bumrah might participate in only three of the five Tests as a precaution. The decision regarding which matches he’ll play remains pending and will depend on the series’ progression and Bumrah’s condition.

“Bumrah knows how to get himself ready, he knows how to prepare,” Morkel stated. “I was blown away to see the energy on the ball the last three days. That’s very exciting to see. I’m happy his body is in good shape at the moment.”

To prepare for the first Test at Headingley starting 20th June, India will engage in a three-day intra-squad match in Beckenham from 6th June. This match will feature both the Test squad and India A players.

India’s bowling combination is a significant discussion point. Aside from Bumrah, they have Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep as primary pace options. Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy may also feature as seam-bowling allrounders.

Morkel is particularly optimistic about Reddy’s potential. “He’s skillful. He’s a guy that can bowl that magical ball, so for him it’s about creating that consistency,” Morkel remarked. “For a team, if we can have the bowling options especially in these conditions, I think he’ll be exciting and can complement this bowling attack.”

As the team gears up to face an assertive England side, Morkel stresses the importance of an impressive start. “England – the brand of cricket they play, we need to be on top of our game,” he noted. “We can’t afford to find our feet in this series.”

With enthusiasm from Morkel about Bumrah and hopes resting on India’s varied bowling strength, the upcoming series promises to be an engaging contest.
