Ndhlovu sidelined for final ODI after Dunedin blow

Zimbabwe opener Kelis Ndhlovu will sit out Wednesday’s third and final ODI against New Zealand after suffering a concussion in the second match at Dunedin. The left-hander is recovering well, though doctors have advised continued observation before she returns to action.

Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed she “briefly lost consciousness” when struck by a Bree Illing bouncer in the seventh over. The ball climbed awkwardly, Ndhlovu tried to duck, and despite a helmet the impact floored her. Medical staff treated her on the field before an ambulance took her to hospital.

“An MRI scan later confirmed there was no skull fracture,” ZC said. “She was treated and subsequently discharged from hospital. Ndhlovu returned for a follow-up examination on Tuesday morning, where further tests confirmed there were no additional complications.”

Tendai Makusha entered as the concussion substitute, but Zimbabwe’s innings never quite settled. They posted a modest total that New Zealand chased with eight wickets in hand, Amelia Kerr’s seven-wicket spell the standout. The hosts now lead the series 2-0.

While the result looked straightforward on paper, Zimbabwe’s camp spoke about the emotional impact of seeing a team-mate stretchered off. Interim coach Sinivasa Satya told local media the dressing-room “went a bit quiet for a while”, adding they were “relieved more than anything” when hospital scans showed no fracture.

For Wednesday, the visitors are unlikely to gamble on Ndhlovu, mindful of modern concussion protocols that place player welfare first. Illing, meanwhile, checked in with her opponent after the match and was “glad to hear she’s doing okay”.

From a cricketing angle, Zimbabwe must re-shape their top order. Ndhlovu had opened confidently, putting on 25 with Modester Mupachikwa before the incident. Without her, someone will need to cover early scoring and negotiate the new ball against a buoyant New Zealand attack.

The final ODI starts 11.00 am local time at the same venue.
